Assessing Postural Stability in the Concussed Athlete

چکیده
As concussion awareness and diagnosis has changed significantly, there is wide variability in the literature on the epidemiology of concussion. The incidence of sportsrelated concussion in high school and collegiate athletes is 0.28 per 1000 athlete-exposures, or 5% of the total number of injuries across different sports. This equates to 1.6 to 3.8 million concussions annually in the United States alone. Despite this already alarming number, there is growing concern that concussion may be underreported in sports. Apart from athletes failing to report a concussion for various reasons, team physicians may employ too high thresholds for or simply miss the diagnosis. A fast and accurate diagnosis of concussion is important, particularly in light of potential long-term neurological deficits 541238 SPHXXX10.1177/1941738114541238Ruhe et alSports Health research-article2014

Concussions are a major health concern for athletes given the potential for these injuries in a wide range of sport activities. The leading concern for clinicians is that athletes are at risk for devastating consequences if they are not evaluated properly and cleared too early to return to play or competition. The evaluation of postural stability has been identified as an important aspect to th...

OBJECTIVE Concussed athlete evaluations often include symptoms, balance, and neurocognitive assessments. We sought to identify the relationship between subjective symptom reports and objective clinical measures. DESIGN A retrospective assessment. SETTING A research laboratory. PATIENTS Concussed collegiate-level athletes (N = 32, 19.7 years) evaluated pre- and postinjury (less than 48 hou...
متن کاملThe value of balance-assessment measurements in identifying and monitoring acute postural instability among concussed athletes.
CLINICAL SCENARIO Sport-related concussions are a significant health issue due to the high incidence of concussions sustained each sports season. Current approaches to the evaluation of acutely concussed athletes include the use of balance assessments to identify and monitor underlying postural instability arising from concussion. Balance assessment has been recommended as a primary measurement...
